After the shock of failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the USA qualifying for this winter’s edition level on points with 4th spot Costa Rica, who needed an extra play off match to qualify. In the previous two World Cups that the USA qualified for, they managed to make it out of the group stages, and may be quietly confidently of repeating this feat this winter. Last summer, USA defeated Mexico in two finals in the space of 2 months, first defeating them 3-2 after extra time in the final of the Nations League, and then defeating them again in the final of the Gold Cup, this time 1-0 after extra time. As cohosts of the next World Cup in 4 years time, this tournament is sure to provide this young side with some invaluable experience.
Player to Watch
24 year old Pulisic has been playing for Europe’s top clubs all his career, moving to Chelsea in 2019 from Dortmund where he had been based for 4 years. Pulisic was USA’s top goalscorer in qualifying with 5 goals in 10 games, and is already in the top 10 all time goalscorers for his country. He also has the best goals per game ratio out of anyone in that list. His creativity will be crucial if USA are to get out of this tough group.
