Best Performance
Belgium won six of their eight qualifiers to finish top of Group E with relative ease to make it to their third consecutive World Cup and fourteenth in history. They achieved their best ever result four years ago, but just fell short in the semi-finals when they were knocked out by eventual champions France. A win against England in Saint Petersburg saw them take third place in the tournament. Last year, they were knocked out at the Quarter Final stage, again, knocked out by the eventual champions. There is a feeling this could be their chance to lift a major trophy with quite a few of their “Golden Generation” reaching their mid-thirties; 8 of the top 10 most capped players in Belgium’s history are still active in the squad today.
Player to Watch
Widely considered to be one of the best midfielders in the world today, De Bruyne’s form in the tournament will be a huge factor in determining how far Belgium can go. The 31 year old has lifted four Premier League titles and six cup titles domestically since 2018, and is frequently in the ‘Team of the Season” in most tournaments he enters, including in the World Cup Dream Team four years ago.
