The stadium, situated just outside of the Doha, has been used to host international matches since it opened in 1976, and has undergone many renovations over time, most recently in 2017. It hosted six matches in the 2011 edition of the AFC Asian Cup, including the final, where Japan defeated Australia 1-0. It also hosted the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup final between Liverpool and Flamengo of Brazil, where the English side triumphed in extra time.
