Best Performance
Poland stuttered to a second place finish in Group I behind England, eventually finishing two points ahead of Albania and three ahead of Hungary, and after receiving a bye in their first play off tie against Russia, they went on to defeat Sweden 2-0 to make it to their 9th World Cup finals in history and 4th in the last 20 years. In 6 of their last 7 outings in all major tournaments since 2002, they have been knocked out in the Group Stages, with the only exception being the 2016 European Championships where they managed to reach the Quarter Final stages before being knocked out by eventual champions Portugal on penalties.
Player to Watch
Lewandowski is the most decorated Polish player in the country’s history in terms of appearances and goals and he contributed 9 goals in qualifying to become the third highest scorer in Europe during these qualifiers. His record, particularly domestically, is truly remarkable, where he scored 238 goals in 253 games for Bayern Munich over 8 seasons, but this summer, he made the move to Spain to join Barcelona.
