Best Performance
The 2021 Copa America champions Argentina qualified for this winter’s tournament with few issues; they progressed without losing a single game, though they did end up below Brazil in qualifying after drawing 6 times. Argentina last won the World Cup all the way back in 1986, but have also been runners up three times, most recently in 2014 when they lost to Germany in the final, and they will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of 4 years ago in Russia when they were knocked out by eventual champions France in the Round of 16. Form though is on Argentina’s side – they haven’t lost a competitive match since the summer of 2019 in the Copa America when they were defeated by Brazil in the semi finals, and they also won the first ever “Finalissima” tournament with a 3-0 win over Italy earlier this year.
Player to Watch
At the age of 35, this is mostly likely Messi’s last World Cup tournament, and he will surely be desperate to lift the one international trophy that eludes him to complete the set having already picked up practically every domestic honour of significance to him. Already the most decorated player for his nation in virtually all aspects, Messi has still proven that he has that unbelievable talent at domestic level this season, and his form will be key to leading Argentina to their first trophy in over 30 years.
